The Strongway wall-mount garden hose reel offers manual winding and a choice of hose-pull directions. It makes sense for a permanent watering station with a suitable mounting surface. The important checks are the item number, usable hose capacity and wall support, rather than an assumption that a metal reel will never leak or wear out.
Which Strongway reel is covered?
Northern Tool currently identifies this configuration as item 109838. Its listed capacity is 150 feet of 5/8-inch hose, with a 150 PSI rating and a six-foot lead-in hose. The watering hose is sold separately. Brass fittings and mounting hardware are listed as included.
Those details describe that item, not every older Strongway reel. If you already own one, compare its label and manual before ordering parts or using current installation instructions. This guide evaluates the documented configuration; it does not report a load test or long-term ownership trial.
Plan the hose direction first
The listed reel can be configured for parallel or perpendicular wall mounting and for left- or right-hand operation. Parallel means the hose is pulled alongside the wall; perpendicular means it is pulled away from it. Sketch the route to your beds before installation so the hose does not repeatedly scrape a corner or cross the crank’s working space.
Leave room to turn the handle, reach the connections and guide the hose. A location immediately beside a downpipe, gate hinge or narrow passage may be inconvenient even if the mounting plate fits. Check the leader hose’s reach without putting its connections under tension.
Capacity in everyday use
The stated 150-foot capacity is a starting point for matching a hose. Outside diameter, stiffness and winding pattern affect the space it occupies. A thick hose may fill the drum sooner than a thinner hose with the same nominal inside diameter. Wind in orderly layers and stop before the hose interferes with the frame; do not force an extra length onto a full reel.
A shorter hose may be the more convenient choice if it reaches all your beds. Measure the actual route around obstacles, rather than buying the longest hose the reel advertises. Manual winding still requires effort, especially if the hose is caught or twisted.
Mounting needs structural support
Use the item-specific manual and hardware appropriate to the actual substrate. Included fasteners are not evidence that siding, thin cladding, weak mortar or an unsupported panel can carry a loaded reel. Have the mounting assessed if the wall construction is uncertain.
Do not substitute a vertical or overhead arrangement simply because the reel can be turned that way. Approved orientations and attachment points matter. The mounting must resist hose-pulling forces as well as the reel and hose weight; a loose mounting should be repaired before further use.
Pressure, leaks and upkeep
The reel’s 150 PSI rating does not mean every water source is suitable. The complete system must stay within the lowest-rated component’s limits. This garden reel is not a pressure-washer high-pressure hose reel.
Shut off water and relieve pressure before inspecting accessible connections. Check washers and threads before tightening further, replace damaged parts with compatible ones, and follow the manual’s storage directions. Powder coating is a protective finish, not a guarantee against corrosion at damaged areas.
This Strongway format is a practical candidate when you can mount it correctly and prefer hand winding. Compare portable and retractable alternatives in the garden hose reel guide if a permanent station does not suit your yard.
