The heavy metal or ceramic construction provides constant, even, and multi-directional radiant heat to the food being cooked inside.

How to Make Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler Over a Campfire
There is nothing quite like eating food from a campfire on a camping trip. Whether you are on a vacation or are camping in your backyard, there are so many delicious recipes you can cook on a campfire. As you will see, peach cobbler is one of those recipes. Although it may seem difficult to cook peach cobbler over a campfire, let alone a Dutch Oven, it is not as difficult as it may seem. Later in this article, I will go over some basic tips for cooking with a Dutch Oven over a campfire, but first, let’s take a look at how to make a campfire peach cobbler.
- 2 pounds peaches, thawed
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 cup sugar, divided
- 1 cup pancake mix
- 1/4 cup butter, cut into 1/8-in. pieces
- 1 large egg
- Sweetened whipped cream or ice cream (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Fire
The first step to making a Dutch Oven peach cobbler is to prepare the fire. This means you’ll need to find a spot to start your campfire. If there happens to be a fire ring where you are camping, you will probably need to push back the ashes from previous fires. If you have to create your own fire pit, clear away any dead grass or vegetation for 8 to 10 feet around. Then dig down into the cleared soil several inches and set the loose dirt off to one side for use in case of emergency. You can mound the dirt around the sides of the pit to act as a firewall, or place large rocks around the edge of the pit to insulate the fire.
After you have prepared your site, arrange your kindling in teepee fashion over your tinder. Then build a larger teepee of firewood over the kindling. Mix the peaches, cinnamon, and 1/2 cup sugar in a 6-quart cast iron camp Dutch oven. Next, in a different medium-sized bowl stir the pancake mix, butter, egg, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/4 cup water to make a thick and chunky batter. Drop 4 evenly spaced heaping spoonfuls of this batter over the peaches. Put the lid on the Dutch Oven.
Step 3: Set Up the Dutch Oven
Next, you will need to set up your Dutch Oven over the fire. For many recipes, you just set the Dutch Oven on top of the hot coals (this is called bottom heat cooking). But there are times when you’ll need to heat both the top and bottom of the oven. To do this, scrape about half the coals to the side and arrange the rest in a circle the size of the Dutch Oven’s outer edge. Set the oven on top of the circle of coals, then pile the rest of the coals on top of the lid. This will ensure that the Dutch Oven peach cobbler will cook and become heated.
Step 4: Begin Cooking
Place the Dutch Oven in the fire, as I have already instructed you. Lift the Dutch Oven lid occasionally to check the food and temperature. To decrease the heat, scrape away some of the coal. To increase the heat, or to cook longer than 45 minutes, add 6 to 10 new briquets of coal or more wood embers (from the wood you moved to the side of your fire pit) every 30 minutes.

Don’t Have the Dutch Oven on the Ground If the Ground Is Cold
If the ground is cold or wet, your peach cobbler will not cook as fast. Although you can usually cook with the Dutch Oven directly on the ground, if the ground is cold you’ll want to set it on a fireproof rack.
Rotate the Dutch Oven Once in a While
Not only should you continue to check on the peach cobbler while it is cooking, but you should also rotate your Dutch Oven. That way, the entire peach cobbler will become cooked and warm instead of just one side of it.
