Use removable ties or suitable fasteners to keep outdoor pillows in place during ordinary use, and store them before strong winds. A heavier pillow or weather-resistant fabric is not a guarantee that it will stay on a chair in a storm.
Start with a place to store them
The simplest solution for an exposed patio is a nearby dry storage space. Choose a location you can reach easily so putting pillows away becomes part of leaving the seating area. A storage box must itself be suitable for the site and secured as its manufacturer requires.
Bring loose items in before conditions become dangerous. National Weather Service wind guidance advises securing outdoor objects when wind alerts are issued. Do not go outside during severe conditions to chase a pillow.
Use covers with well-placed ties
A cover with short, securely sewn ties can attach to a suitable part of the chair frame. Check that the attachment does not interfere with folding mechanisms, reclining parts or normal use. Keep loose loops and trailing ends out of reach of children and away from walking routes.
Test the fit while seated. A tie that pulls the pillow out of position or strains a seam needs adjustment. Remove the pillow for cleaning and inspect the ties regularly for fraying.
Check fasteners before adding adhesive
Hook-and-loop fasteners can work when the materials and installation are appropriate. Sew-on fasteners may suit a removable fabric cover; adhesive types need a surface compatible with the adhesive and outdoor conditions.
Read the fastener and furniture instructions first. Adhesive can lift finishes, leave residue or fail on damp, dusty or textured surfaces. Do not promise damage-free removal unless the product supports that use. Try a discreet area where the furniture maker permits it.
Skip hard weights and improvised hooks
Stones, bottles and sand-filled pouches attached to pillow corners can make seating uncomfortable and create falling or swinging objects. Safety pins and exposed hooks are also poor additions to a cushion people lean against.
Do not use elastic bungees as a routine pillow fastening system. Choose a cover or attachment designed for the seating instead. If a pillow has no suitable attachment and regularly moves, storage or a different pillow design is a better solution than adding weight.
Choose fabric for weather and cleaning
Outdoor fabric can resist sun or moisture better than an indoor cover, but those properties do not anchor it. Follow the care label for washing, drying and any protective treatment. A spray does not automatically make an indoor pillow suitable for permanent outdoor exposure.
Dry pillows thoroughly before enclosed storage. Inspect for dampness after rain, particularly if water can enter through seams or zippers. Avoid compressing a filling unless its care instructions allow it.
