So you’ve got your own urban garden that thrives by following our tips. You may also have a porch that doubles as a sanctuary. But the ultimate garden accessory for men is a man cave at the bottom of the garden. If you are planning your own hideaway, here are some tips on how to best proceed.

Make an Honest-to-Goodness Assessment

Go to your garden and assess everything. What’s your purpose for building a man cave in the first place? How much space are you working with? How much time and effort are you willing to put in? And most importantly, how much are you willing to spend?

Start from Scratch

The easiest way to create a man cave is to convert a large shed. Strip your garden shed (or specially bought shed) bare. From there, it will be easier to visualize how you want your space to look. For more detailed planning, measure the area and use those numbers to plan out your man cave accurately. This will save you time in the long run.

Choose a Theme

Most man caves are created for a purpose. Common themes usually range from gaming, music rooms, sports rooms, a workshop, or studio. A place to put your sports memorabilia and watch live games is a common theme for man caves, and we will use it as an example going forward.

List What You Need

Making a list of the things you will place inside your man cave accomplishes two things. First, you are less likely to forget something important. Second, you are more likely to stick within your budget. For those who like playing sports, a man cave is the ideal place to put a pool or table tennis table and hang up some sports-themed accessories, such as the flags or jerseys of your favorite team.

Build, Build, Build

Put your carpenter’s hat on and build the simple stuff, like the shelves and the dividers. If you are planning on installing some plumbing and electrical work, we advise that you seek professional help if you’re unsure of what to do. Better safe than sorry later on, right? Finish it off with a paint job. You might opt to paint your man cave in the colors of your favorite sports team. You can even have their logo/s on the wall.

Fill the Man Cave

Now that you’ve got everything set, it’s time you fill your man cave according to your passions. From the centerpiece pool table to the surround-sound home theater, set out your cave exactly as you want it. In keeping with our sports theme, we suggest you include memorabilia of your favorite sports personalities. A man cave is the perfect location to keep all the items that might not be “welcome” in your home. For instance, that Eric Cantona-signed soccer ball or Tom Brady signed jersey would be better appreciated in the cave than tucked away out of sight in the main house.

Mark Your Territory

It’s your home away from home, so might as well tell everyone what it is: your man cave. Thus, we recommend that you place a good sign that marks your territory. Make it known to the world that it is your space, and that it is hallowed ground.

Secure Your Spot

Finally, you will need to secure your man cave the way you secure your home, especially if you have TVs and other expensive equipment. Install sturdy locks and if possible, include other safety features too, like an alarm.

Once you’ve got your man cave ready, all that’s left is for you to introduce it to your friends. And you can do exactly that by hosting an awesome backyard party
