Weber Original Kettle 22-Inch: Features, Limits and Model Checks

Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill

The 22-inch Weber Original Kettle is a straightforward lidded charcoal grill. Its round grate supports everyday direct grilling and offers room to arrange a smaller fire beside an indirect cooking area. Choose the exact version carefully: Original Kettle, Premium and other Weber kettles do not necessarily include the same ash collection system or accessories.

The U.S. Original Kettle 22-inch, model 741001, lists 363 square inches of cooking area, a plated-steel cooking grate, porcelain-enameled bowl and lid, dampers and a One-Touch cleaning system. Check the model label on an older grill before using this specification list to order parts.

The bowl’s diameter is useful for comparing size, but it does not guarantee a particular serving count. Food thickness, spacing and whether you need an indirect zone all affect capacity. A full grate of burgers is a different job from a covered roast with the fuel placed to one side.

What the kettle layout does well

The enclosed shape offers more flexibility than an open folding grill. You can cook with the lid on, adjust airflow and move food relative to the fuel. Those are design capabilities, not a claim that this guide has measured temperature uniformity or compared cooking results with competing grills.

Charcoal cooking still requires attention. Start with the fuel arrangement recommended for the task in the owner’s instructions and make controlled adjustments. Repeatedly lifting the lid changes conditions; avoid chasing every short-lived temperature fluctuation. Use a suitable food thermometer instead of deciding doneness from color or elapsed time alone.

Understand the cleanup system

One-Touch assists with moving ash out of the bowl, but it does not make handling hot ash safe. Wait until the fire, ash and grill are completely cold before disposal or storage. Keep the cleaning mechanism free to move without forcing damaged parts. Do not assume the basic Original model includes the enclosed ash catcher seen on a different kettle.

A lid does not make the grill airtight or instantly extinguish every ember. Follow the owner’s shutdown procedure and allow adequate cooling. Never put a warm kettle or used charcoal in a vehicle, garage or enclosed storage area.

Warranty and replacement parts

The model’s published U.S. warranty separates components: bowl and lid coverage for rust-through or burn-through is ten years, while other categories have shorter terms. This is not a blanket ten-year warranty on every part. Check Weber’s warranty information, the purchase date and the applicable owner’s guide for exclusions and regional terms.

For a used kettle, inspect the legs, handles, bowl, lid and ash mechanism. A recognizable brand name does not establish the condition of a particular grill. Identify replacement grates by model and diameter, and budget for missing parts before comparing the purchase price with a complete new unit.

Is it a good fit?

Consider it when you want a relatively simple charcoal setup and are willing to supply your own preparation surface and manage ash cleanup. Choose a different configuration if a large worktable or enclosed ash collection is essential. Use charcoal outdoors only and follow required clearances; the U.S. Fire Administration warns against charcoal use in enclosed spaces.

For other layouts, see our charcoal grill buying guide. Compare the usable cooking surface, fuel access, cleanup and required outdoor space before choosing by appearance or an advertised total area.
