How Tall Do Redwood Trees Grow? Forest Giants and Garden Size

Coast redwoods can exceed 350 feet in exceptional old-growth forest conditions. That is a species capability, not a height to expect from every garden tree. For planting, identity, cultivar, local climate and available space matter more than the current world-record measurement.

NC State describes coast redwood as a very large evergreen conifer, broadly 60 to 200 feet or more. Even the lower end is substantial. Neither a record height nor a nursery’s ten-year size guarantees eventual dimensions on your property.

Which redwood do you mean?

  • Coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens: the exceptionally tall evergreen of coastal forests in northern California and southwestern Oregon.
  • Giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum: a different tree associated with the Sierra Nevada, famous for enormous trunk volume.
  • Dawn redwood, Metasequoia glyptostroboides: a deciduous conifer that sheds foliage seasonally; it is not an evergreen coast redwood.

The National Park Service’s comparison of the three redwoods helps separate them. Check a nursery plant’s full botanical and cultivar name before applying a height estimate.

How quickly does coast redwood grow?

It can grow rapidly in favorable conditions, but yearly growth is not a fixed schedule. Establishment, moisture, root health, light and climate affect the result. A transplanted tree may spend time establishing roots before substantial top growth; stress can slow growth later.

Do not multiply a quoted annual growth rate by fifty years to calculate final height. Trees do not add the same number of feet indefinitely. Exceptional forest giants developed over long periods in particular environments; a claim that every redwood reaches full height in fifty years is not a useful planning rule.

If you already own one, record size over several years from a consistent viewpoint. Have a qualified arborist assess a very large tree’s condition from the ground. Climbing it or an improvised ladder is unnecessary for deciding whether it is outgrowing the site.

Why do some forests support such tall trees?

The National Park Service’s tree overview places coast redwoods in their moist coastal environment. A hot, dry inland yard is not equivalent to a cool coastal forest simply because irrigation is available.

Roots need suitable soil and space as well as water. Do not assume an enormous tree has an equally deep taproot or can ignore drought. Protect the root area from excavation, compaction and abrupt drainage changes. Seek site-specific advice before paving, trenching or building near an established redwood.

Is it suitable for a backyard?

Start with mature space, not sapling size. Consider the crown, roots, buildings, overhead lines, access for future care and neighboring property. A narrow-looking young tree may still become far too large for its setting.

A cultivar sold for a smaller or unusual habit needs its own information; a generic species page cannot establish its dimensions. Discuss local performance with an arborist or knowledgeable nursery and compare trees naturally suited to your space.

Do not plan to keep a large-growing tree small through repeated topping. If the site cannot accommodate its long-term form, choose another plant before planting. For an existing mature tree, obtain an assessment rather than cutting large branches or roots without understanding the consequences.

Are redwoods immune to fire and pests?

No. Bark and other characteristics contribute to resilience, but redwoods can still be injured or killed. Fire damage, decay and site stress need assessment; neither a living crown nor thick bark proves structural soundness. Avoid claims that these trees have no natural enemies or always recover after fire.

Can you visit the tallest tree?

Measurements can change, and finding a particular record-holder is unnecessary to appreciate redwood height. The National Park Service says the Hyperion area is closed to protect sensitive resources. Use designated trails and check current park guidance. This article does not provide directions into the closed area.
