Our Onyx Nyjer Tube Bird Feeder Review

Reviews

As of this writing there were only 41 customer comments left on Amazon.  While this is not a lot of feedback, it did give me a good feel for this feeder.  I was able to hear consistent pros and cons.  I've condensed the responses into this report.  I hope that this makes your bird shopping experience much faster and easier.

Item Specifics

The Onyx Nyjer Tube Bird Feeder  is 18 inches long.  It has 4 feeding ports and can hold up to three pounds of seed.  The tube part is made in the USA.  All of this company's feeders feature a twist release base for a quick and easy clean out.  The open interior also helps to make this feeder easy to a clean.  A clean feeder helps to maintain the health of the birds.  An easily detachable cap facilitates easy cleaning.  The perches were made to be comfortable for the birds.  This feeder has multiple landing areas so that it can accommodate numerous bird species.  The two part perch design with patented engineering feature locks the port in place and gives the feeder a unique look.

The weight of this feeder is 6 pounds with dimensions of 2.8 x 2.8 x 18 inches.

Size

This is a very large bird feeder.  With a weight of 6 pounds and 18 inches in length by 2.8 x 2.8 in width, you will get a lot of seed in here.  If you are looking to feed many birds or just don't feel like filling a feeder so often than you may really like this large size.  Some customers didn't realize how big this feeder is until they received it.  Think about what size of a feeder you want before purchasing one just in case you don't want a large one.

Here, one customer describes how large it is, and wants others to be aware that this is a very big feeder.  She reports, "This feeder is too large for my purposes as it is wide and extremely heavy. I have to hang it from a Shepards hook and it falls over if it is filled to the top. I an only fill it to about 25% only. That's my problem not theirs. The goldfinches DO come to the feeder and even sing a very pretty song. I also bought the large bottom tray and like it as it catches most of the seed that the birds fling around. Now I just need to find a smaller feeder that the tray will work with. This was an expensive mistake ON MY PART. Just be sure you pay attention to the dimensions, weight etc. now I am off to look at smaller feeders."

Sturdy and Well Built

The most common response that customers left was how sturdy and well built the Onyx Nyjer Tube Bird Feeder is.  The following is one customer comment left that summarizes what many others have said.  "I am very impressed! This is a very solid, well crafted bird feeder. Even when empty, it has heft due to the metal used for the perches, feeding ports, and cover. The bottom locks into place and easily twists off for cleaning. It took a couple weeks for the local finches to accept the new feeder, but now they visit daily and seem to love it."

Squirrel Proof? Or Not?

Most of the bird feeders I've reviewed are not squirrel proof.  However even though being squirrel proof was not an advertised selling point for this feeder, it does in fact appear to be squirrel proof.  Here is one customer's response pertaining to squirrels, "Frustrates the squirrels and bigger birds. The finches and chickadees love it!".  And another, "FINALLY, a bird feeder that has lasted over a year and still looks great. It's easy to clean, easy to fill, keeps the seed dry, and isn't riddled with squirrel chew marks. I was a little hesitant to purchase this at first, given the price point compared to other feeders, but it has more than paid for itself. When I replace my other feeders I will ignore the price difference and purchase the Droll Yankee brand again."

Pros

This is a really well built bird feeder.  With some other bird feeders, you need to watch that parts don't break.  I was not seeing complaints like this at all with the Onyx Nyjer Tube Bird Feeder.  On the contrary, many people responded how well built this bird feeder is.  It's also very easy to clean and fill.  You also can get a lot of feed in this large feeder.  Without seed, it weighs 6 pounds and is 18 inches high.

Cons

Unfortunately there are only 4 ports for the birds to feed from.  People were hoping that with a feeder of this size, that there would be more ports for birds to feed from.  Another con is that the price is very high.

Onyx Nyer Tube Feeder Conclusion

If you are wanting a large feeder, than you may want to seriously consider the Onyx Nyer Tube Feeder.  It is 18 inches high by 2.8 inches in the tubes width diameter.  The nice thing about a bird feeder this size, is that you don't have to fill it often, or if you have a lot of birds, you can constantly feed a large amount of birds.  The Onyx Tube Feeder is sturdy and well built.  It has 4 ports for birds to feed from, which unfortunately is not a lot, but still you potentially could have 4 birds feeding at all times.  This feeder is both easy to fill and easy to clean.  I don't see how you can go wrong with buying the Onyx Nyer Tuber Feeder.
