Item Specifics

The Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer is rainproof in just 2 hours.  Visible results can be noticed in 2 to 4 days after applying.  This product contains 41% glyphosate.  It can cover over 25,000 square feet, and makes up to 21 gallons of ready-to-use spray.  The Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer if great to use around walkways, driveways, along fences, around flowerbeds, trees, and shrubs, and even to get rid of weeds in your garden.  When using it for weeds in your garden, make sure you follow the directions printed on the label.  For best results, it is recommended to apply this weed killer on a warm sunny day when daytime temperature is above 60°F and no rainfall is in the forecast for 24 hours.  Keep in mind that this is not recommended for spot spraying in your lawn, because in addition to killing the weeds in your lawn it will also kill the grass.

Will Kill All Plants That It Comes into Contact with, Including Grass

This product is not a spot weed killer.  The reason is that it will kill the surrounding grass that it touches.  Take great care around all other plants that you don't want killed.  A customer explained it like this, "Also, be cautioned. IT KILLS EVERYTHING IT TOUCHES. Yes, your grass around the weeds you spray on will die. Yes, the plants you accidentally over spray on will die (unless it's a little over spray on a huge plant like a tree, of course that won't do anything). Yes, this stuff does not discriminate on its plant victims, so be very careful. My yard is mostly rock landscape, so I don't have to worry about it for the most part. I just learned because I killed a section of grass over spraying a huge weed, and sure enough it all died."

High Concentration of Glyphosate

The main active ingredient in this product is glyphosate.  This is what will kill the plants that it comes in contact with.  A customer explained in detail how glyphosate works and the difference between this concentration and Roundup.  He said, "A lot of people are confused about the difference between this product and Roundup, so I thought I would share a little information.  The active ingredient in Roundup is a chemical called glyphosate. It was discovered by Monsanto in the 1970's and patented soon after. The patents expired in 2000, so this is a generic version of the product.  Glyphosate only works on actively growing weeds and plants, so you will not get results as a pre-emergent herbicide (i.e. it will not kill seeds, or dormant weeds). The product works somewhat slowly (over the course of several days to a week or longer) because it inhibits certain plant enzymes that are required for plant life function. Because of this "slow" action, some Roundup products also include a defoliant to show more immediate "action". (The defoliant causes the leaves to drop off, but the weed would still live - it is the glyphosate that "kills" the weed).  Most commercially available Roundup products contain between 1-2% glyphosate. This concentrate is 41%. Once a certain saturation level is reached within the weed, applying more (or stronger) glyphosate will not accelerate its death. It is more effective to treat several times with 2% solution over the course of a month, than to treat once with a stronger solution."

Use Extreme Caution Around Pets

If you've followed the news, you may have heard of all of the controversy about Roundup and similar products like this that contain glyphosate.  If you choose to use it be careful to not use it around children, pets and don't get any on yourself.  One of the customers who had a bad experience with a pet getting sick, cautioned others by saying, "ALSO CAUTION TO PET OWNERS: putting this product on my lawn made my dog (100+lb dane) EXTREMELY ill. He never ate any weeds because I kept an eye on him and didn't let him out until at least 5 hours after I sprayed. He must've gotten some on his paw and licked it off, but he was sick for a week with diarrhea and vomiting that required electrolyte rehydration and prescriptions from the vet to stop the gut upset. I have sprayed RoundUp and other weed killers (vinegar, etc) and NEVER have had this issue. Huge, huge word of warning. DO NOT buy this product if you have animals. I'm sure if he was a smaller dog we would've had a much bigger problem on our hands."

A Lot of Reports of Containers Leaking

There were a lot of reports of containers leaking.  Here is one of those complaints, "This was a replacement jug of a previous one that I had bought which leaked. This one leaked worse. I opened the jug (and 3 others I bought and NONE had the top sealed with a piece of round sealer. Virtually every plastic bottle sold in America is sealed underneath the cap. Now I question if the product I bought really is Weed and Grass killer since all 5 I ordered were not vacuum sealed. I bought this product because it was a great price and now I know why.  Amazon has always made things right but I am not sure I want more opened jugs."

Use Caution If You Have Bees

Perhaps the biggest controversy with this product is that it will kill bees.  If you are around farm land, or care about bees and the importance of bees and how they pollinate plants,  you may not want to use this product.  A customer explained it this way, "This is a toxic bee and beneficial insect killer. Bees are being killed left and right because we choose to use toxic chemicals. It's bad enough that big corporations use it but as individuals we can make a choice not to. Do not use as it is bad for the environment and it also dries and blows in the air and you end up inhaling it. I will take weeds anytime over inhaling toxic dust.

Common Questions

Here are some top questions that I found for people considering buying the Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer.

  • chevron-circle-right
Can I use a hose end sprayer for this?  Yes, you can.
  • chevron-circle-right
Does this product get less effective with age?  If the container is not exposed to direct light and is sealed, it has an unlimited shelf life.  There is no expiration date on glyphosate.  However, if you leave it open, allow light to break it down etc. you will reduce its effectiveness.  Therefore, as long as you keep it in a cool, dry place away from the sun, you should be able to use this weed killer for a long time.
  • chevron-circle-right
Are you supposed to apply it to the roots or is it ok to apply to just the leaves?  You only need to apply this weed killer to the leaves.  Make sure you only apply it to the plants you are wanting to kill.
