Turn off the water supply, release pressure through the nozzle or outlet, let the expandable hose drain and contract, then store it according to its own instructions. Do not disconnect a pressurized hose as the first step. A loose, protected storage position is more useful than winding the hose as tightly as possible.
Finish watering before disconnecting
- Close the tap supplying the hose.
- Point the nozzle safely toward an appropriate area and open it to release remaining water and pressure. Follow any shutoff-valve directions for your model.
- Let the hose contract naturally. Do not stretch, twist or yank it to force the process.
- Once pressure is released, disconnect and drain remaining water as the instructions require.
Keep the hose clear of feet and obstacles while it contracts. Do not strike it against the ground to empty it. If a valve will not operate or the hose is damaged, stop and follow the manufacturer’s service advice.
Choose storage that supports the relaxed hose
A broad hanger, loose coil or suitable open storage container may work, depending on the product. Avoid sharp hooks, tight clips and weight hanging from one small point. Keep fittings from pulling on the tube.
A standard crank reel is not automatically suitable for every expandable hose. Check the hose maker’s directions before buying or using one. Do not wind an expanded, pressurized hose tightly onto a reel simply to save space.
The Pocket Hose Silver Bullet manufacturer page, for example, recommends draining, allowing contraction and storing away from sunlight in a cool, dry place. That is a model-specific example; your hose’s own instructions govern its storage and operating limits.
Protect it from freezing and heat
Before freezing weather, drain and move the hose to a protected location appropriate to its instructions. A cover or insulation does not guarantee that water left inside will not freeze. An unheated shed may also freeze, so consider its actual conditions.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure, hot surfaces and storage near a heater. Do not assume an expandable hose is approved for hot water or pressure-washer use. Those are operating questions to confirm on the label, not features established by the word “garden.”
Let the exterior dry and keep it clean
Remove loose dirt gently and use only cleaning methods permitted by the maker. Let a wet outer sleeve dry appropriately before packing it away. A sealed box can trap moisture; do not treat a closed container as a universal solution for every product.
Store where the hose will not be crushed, chewed or snagged, and keep the walking route clear. A container should be large enough to hold the relaxed hose without forcing bends at its connections.
Inspect before the next use
Look for damaged covering, bulges, cracked connectors and missing or deteriorated washers. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for compatible replacement parts. A leaking inner tube is not necessarily repairable with a conventional hose splice.
Do not return a visibly failing hose to service simply because it still carries water. Address damage first, and check the connection before gradually restoring supply under the product’s instructions.
Common storage questions
Can it stay outside all winter? Do not assume so. Follow the specified temperature and storage limits; draining and protected storage are preferable to relying on a cover through freezing conditions.
Does it need a special reel? It needs an approved storage method, which may not be a reel at all. A loosely supported contracted hose can be simpler when permitted.
Will correct storage guarantee years of service? No. Storage reduces avoidable stress but cannot establish a lifespan for an unknown product. Inspect its condition each time and retain its care instructions.
