How Thick Are Patio Pavers? Match the Product to the Installation

A common thickness for small interlocking concrete patio pavers is 60 mm, about 2⅜ inches. That is not a universal standard for brick, natural stone, large concrete slabs or porcelain. Choose a product approved for the intended load and installation method, then design the supporting base and drainage around it.

Use thickness as one part of the specification

The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association construction guidance discusses 60 mm concrete units for pedestrian and limited vehicle applications and thicker units for heavier traffic. Those statements concern an appropriate pavement system; they do not mean any 60 mm patio product can carry any vehicle.

Ask the supplier for the exact product’s permitted uses. Its dimensions, material, strength and support conditions all matter. A large slab can behave differently from a small interlocking paver of the same thickness.

Do not choose solely by whether a patio will host gatherings or children. Instead, identify unusual loads such as vehicles, a masonry feature or a hot tub, and obtain appropriate design advice. A thicker surface unit does not by itself establish that the ground and base can carry those loads.

Compare different materials separately

Concrete pavers come in different formats and thicknesses. Clay paving bricks also have product-specific dimensions; wall bricks should not be substituted simply because they look similar. Natural stone varies by stone type, dimensions, finish and whether it is calibrated to a consistent thickness.

Outdoor porcelain is another system. For example, Belgard’s porcelain installation guide covers 20 mm products with specified installation options. That does not make a thin indoor tile suitable for a sand-set outdoor patio.

When requesting samples, ask for a cross-section and installation sheet as well as a color sample. Confirm the actual thickness and tolerances of the product you will receive.

Account for the whole build-up

Finished height includes the prepared ground, base, bedding or mortar system, and paving unit. Plan that total against door thresholds, steps, drains and adjacent paths. Changing paver thickness after excavation can create height problems even if the new paver is otherwise suitable.

Do not correct a poorly prepared base with an arbitrarily thick bedding layer. Follow the installation specification for each layer. Base depth, compaction and drainage depend on soil, climate and loading, not only on the surface paver’s thickness.

Edge restraint and correct joints are also part of a segmental system. Randomly substituting gravel, sand or mortar in the joints can change how it performs. Use materials specified for that pavement design.

Check the details for an overlay

An existing concrete slab may be suitable for some overlay systems, but assess its condition, movement, drainage and available height first. Check doors, steps and drainage outlets before adding another layer.

Use the paver manufacturer’s approved method for that substrate. A thin overlay unit intended for support on concrete may not work over an aggregate base, and the reverse should not be assumed either.

Ask these questions before ordering

Confirm the product name, thickness, dimensions, outdoor exposure rating and permitted traffic. Ask which base and bedding details apply, whether special support is needed for larger units, and how water will leave the patio. Include any unusual concentrated loads in the discussion.

Keep those answers with the installation record. If you are still choosing the surface material, our patio paver types guide compares the main choices. Thickness selection comes after you understand the product and the proposed system.
