About this item
- Tagetes erecta tall, or commonly referred to as African Marigold, is a robust annual that brightens up any landscape setting. This variety, Sierra, is 28 inches in height and produces large, flat pom pom blooms that are vibrant orange. The blooms are very textured with many little frilly petals.
- These marigolds grow 28 inches tall and grow as an annual across the country in USDA zones 3 - 10.
- This larger variety is perfect for the flower bed or in larger containers. When planted in a mass grouping, the color is magnificent! They make nice cut flowers as well. Marigolds perform from late spring through frost, and with some deadheading, the blooming will continue to be heavy.
- Sow 3 seeds per plant. Start the seeds indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the end of frost season. Press the seed into the soil and lightly cover with soil. Keep the seed moist. With a temperature of 70 - 75F, germination is usually within 20 days. Marigolds can bloom from seed in 8 – 10 weeks.
- Transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Space the plants 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun and in moist, well-drained soil. Marigolds are usually resistant to deer.

Product Description
A Great Choice For Beginners
These African Daisy flowers are reliable and therefore popular for children or novice gardeners to grow.
African Marigold (Tagetes Erecta Tall Sierra Orange)
This variety of Marigold is a taller version then others. It is known as an African Marigold or Aztec Marigold. It looks especially attractive in mass plantings. Grow these flowers if you want to have large, showy, never-fading orange blooms. They will easily brighten up any garden or flower bed!
The Aztec Marigold will perform well in poor soil as long as there is good moisture. African Marigold care involves deadheading spent blooms to promote new flowers. They have a very long bloom season from late spring through fall in most regions. They burst with eye-catching color all season long!
The African Marigold is actually native to Mexico, contrary to its name. Uncultivated African Marigolds can often be located in pine-oak forests. The Aztec Marigold will tolerate dry or clay soil, but performs its best in evenly moist, well-drained soil. While it does rather well when planted in the full sun, it appreciates some light afternoon shade. It does not do well in full shade however.

How to Grow
The African Marigold is best grown from seed started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Press seed into soil and lightly cover. Keep seed moist until germination.
Transplant outside after the last frost. Plant deep in areas that are protected from wind or rain so stem support is not needed. Deadhead spent flowers promptly.

Packet had 156 seeds that were sown into pre soaked soilless potting mix on about a one inch grid. Instructions say put three per pot. For maximum production instead of thinning, I start in open flat and transplant into individual pots early on.
The seeds were trimmed, the light end was removed so the seeds looked a little strange. After sowing the seeds had potting mix sieve sprinkle cover and Saran Wrap put over to keep things moist. Flat was placed under one of the 1000 watt full spectrum grow lights in grow booth and received 14-16 hours of light a day. Sprouting was mostly 4-7 days. After five days or during sprout, Saran Wrap was carefully removed and watered a few times a day gently to keep soil adequately moist.
A few plants were fairly small compared to the others and as picture shows one was barely up and one overachiever was in bud. Out of 156, 70 sprouted. Or 44.8% … most were fairly close to the large one, vigorous four or more leaves. Five including the just sprouted one are about 8-10 days behind the others. A commercial nursery site suggested 11 weeks advance to getting these to market size, at a good size to harden off and plant out. These have eight weeks to go…
To maximize plants-for-seed planted, suggest the open flat with grid spacing the seeds, transplant up 2-3 weeks after PLANTING.
Will update as blooms open, on color. Even if they don’t give pink and salmon shades, they ARE French style marigolds and will work for companion plantings. Do plan on planting extra, I planned on 3:1 (for every three, getting one plant.) and to hopefully get at least half of those showing pink and salmon. And having a garden job for the ones not in the front flowerbeds. Yes I’d buy more seeds from this source.

Edit: The company got back to me and said they are coated for ease of planting. I've never seen such a thing but I will plant them and update my review if/when they sprout. Thank you. Also wanted to add that I messaged the company twice today and they answered today. I didn't mean to make it sound like they were taking forever to answer. So their response was fairly quick as well.
** edit **
I only planted about 9 seeds on July 14th today is July 26 and this is what I have so far ( sprouts) will updated again when they bloom with a picture) Will be transferred into separate pots soon.
FINALE EDIT
I only planted about 9 seeds. Every seed germinated and are beautiful. I'm glad I ordered these. I was thrown off at first by them being yellow. I am newish to growing things and never had coated seeds! I included a picture of one of the blooms. I would highly recommend.
