STARTING: How Much Water to Begin
First time buyer of coco-coir. Here's what you need to know to begin using this product.I put the brick of coir in a wheel barrel with 4 gallons of warm/hot tap water. Use better water if you're extremely serious about ph and all that. I don't go to those measures personally.Walk away. I came back the next day to find the coir brick (saturated) and I began to break it up. 4 HOT gallons of water was perfect. The end of this review is to tell the reader how many US Gallon containers this will fill. If you T A P the pot on a hard surface a few 2-3 times to settle the potting mix you will get 17 gallons of media. If you don't T A P the container you will get barely short of 20 gallons of media. Call it 20.My third photo I made a "snowball" with the potting mix to see if it held together and it DOES NOT. That tells you that it's the perfect moisture consistency (Not TOO WET) to mix in your other ingredients AT THIS LEVEL OF soil-media consistency. My attempt at the snowball fell apart 100% and nothing stuck to my hand. It's the perfect level for mixing in your other organics and perlite or vermiculite or whatever else you may use; sand, etc.Hope this helps you'all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product for the price
Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2018
Let me start by saying I keep reptiles... Lots of reptiles, its hard to find an acceptable solution for those that want a naturalistic substrate that is cost effective when you have 10 enclosures that total up to around 140 foot of floor space. That is where this product shines. It holds humidity extremely I've not had any mold issues even with some of my more humid enclosures. Promotes phenomenal sheds in all my snakes with close monitoring of humidity and temps. It is a fine coir so for smaller reptile species feeding wet prey items is not recommended as it risks impaction and nobody wants that! I would compare this to any number of the other Forrest floor type bedding's that are sold in the pet trade. Be warned though one brick of this will easily fill a large rubber maid tote with coir. So if you are looking to fill a large amount of small enclosures or a few rather large enclosures this a definite option. *A side note... I only gave the product 4 stars because i have found strings and plastic debris in my most recent order of this product*
