Customers find the shovel spade easy to use, simple, and well-made. They say it saves time and effort, and that it's easy to attach a stronger one if it breaks.
Handle arrived banged up with the coating on it penetrated in several places. In addition, while I was attempting to remove one of the stickers from the steel part on the bottom, the black coating began to peel off as well. I put the sticker back in place because I didn't want to leave the steel without protection and uncoated. Upon further inspection, I noticed that there were places on the steel that were already chipped. I haven't decided whether to keep it or not because of the 15-yr warranty.
Not much to say about a yard tool when leaving a review right? Well, I can say that is is a very effective tamper and was worth not having to go to the DIY home store because they are always sold out in this size. We used it for leveling under an above ground pool and when we built a recessed patio. It was instrumental in both projects and stood up to 3 weeks of work. Hubby and I could both use it without any "Ah! this is too heavy for me to use" issues.
Mud bug season!! ARGH!!! This time of year down south I am forever filling holes in the yard , cuz our fur babies can't stand hearing the crayfish under ground and not being able to see them! It's the only time of year they dig!! I bought this out of the frustration of needing to get the fill dirt compacted better then I could by just tamping it with my feet. The "by foot method" didn't get the dirt tamped enough to make it an effort for the goofball boys to dig it right back out.
Most of the holes I fill are never more than six-seven inches deep, maybe half foot across but a couple of weeks ago my "boys" managed to dig out a hole that was a little over a foot deep and about two feet wide!! They got the idea to team work the same spot! Once I got the hole filled, I was glad to have this tamper ready to go. It did the job in half the time the "by foot method" would have taken and it got the dirt packed enough that the boys can't just flip it out of the area like it is cotton candy fluff.
The tamper is heavy enough to do a solid job of getting the dirt packed, but not so heavy I can't manage it. I'm in my mid 50's about 5'3 so I needed something that wasn't going to weigh a ton and be hard to work with.
Tween this tamper and training collars, I am hoping we can get thru the next mud bug season with the boys thinking it won't be so cool to dig to see what is under ground.
It's a quality tamper, 4 star review because I feel the handle should be a slightly larger diameter for better gripping and comfort. Heavy steal head giving you some weight for tamping.
I had to dig up a long dripper supply line - in clay soil. The clay immediately turned to had dry clods. That's when I ordered this tamper. It worked like a charm - "lift-and-drop" a time or two and the area was practically smooth. It saved a lot of time and effort.
