Many people assume that summer is the time to go on fun outings and mini vacations.  And while it is nice to do activities during the warm summer weather, there are also many fun activities you can do in the fall.  In this article, I’ll go over different fall activities to put on your bucket list this year.  Have fun!

Go Apple Picking

Along with fall comes a bountiful harvest.  If you don’t have your own garden, let alone your own apple tree, consider going to a local orchard to pick your own apples.  Not only is this a fun activity for the whole family, but you’ll also come home with lots of apples.  If you need some delicious apple recipes, click here.

Visit a Corn Maze

Once again, this a fun activity for the entire family.  Your family can race to see who gets through the corn maze first, or you can enjoy slowly walking through the endless rows of corn.  Don’t get lost!

Go for a Hike

With the cool weather, this is the perfect time of year to go for a hike.  Check out local trails and places with beautiful scenery.  Remember to dress properly for the weather.  With the cooler air setting in, you’ll probably want to take a sweater and a hat.

Go to a Pumpkin Patch

Every year, pumpkin patches around the country become loaded with pumpkins.  Now is the perfect time to go pick some of your own pumpkins.  You can either carve them and make jack o’lanterns, or you could make delicious recipes out of it like pumpkin pie.

Rake Leaves

Raking leaves may not seem like a fun activity to put on your bucket list.  But it must be done sometime, and with the proper tools and enthusiasm, raking leaves can be a fun chore to do.  Include the entire family on this chore and have fun jumping around in the leaves.

Make Homemade Caramel Apples

If you decide to go pick some apples at a local orchard, consider making this tasty treat.  The recipe is very easy to make.  Line a baking pan with an oiled sheet of parchment paper.  Push a candy apple stick into the core of each apple.  Combine syrup, sugars, heavy cream, and salt in a large saucepan over medium-high heat (you’ll need one cup of everything except for the salt, which you’ll need 1/4 teaspoon of).  Simmer until the mixture reaches 270 degrees F, which will take about 15 minutes.  Remove from heat and stir in the butter (3 tablespoons) and vanilla (3/4 teaspoon).  Let it cool for 6 to 8 minutes, until the caramel thickens and becomes like toffee.  Dip and gently swirl the apples into the caramel and place them on the prepared baking sheet.  Let it cool completely before eating.

Make an Autumn Craft

There are so many different fall crafts you can make.  Try making a fall wreath and maybe decorate some pine cones.  You can also make bird feeders out of pine cones by dipping the pine cones and peanut butter and sprinkling some bird seed on it.  If you want to be really creative, you could knit or crochet a scarf or socks for winter.

Plant Fall Flowers

Mums are a wonderful option, but there are many other flowers that can be planted this time of year.  Have fun gardening, and enjoy the beauty that flowers give.

Decorate Your House for Fall

With fall approaching, now is the perfect time to decorate for it.  You can be traditional and line jack o’lanterns around your home, or you could do something completely different such as hang corn husks above your door.  As for the inside of your home, include some fall flowers as your table centerpiece and decorate with mini pumpkins.

Visit a Fall Festival

There are so many different fall festivals you can visit, and each one is slightly different from others.  Common activities at fall festivals include dancing, music, tasty fall foods, contests, and parades.  However, some have special themes such as an apple picking festival, cranberry picking festival, and one even is a star gazing festival.

Shop at a Local Candle Shop

It is easy to simply turn on the light switch when you want light.  But if you want an extra glow to shine in your home, consider buying some candles.  And what better way to buy candles than to support a local candle shop.

Host a Movie Night

You can either invite some of your friends to the movie night, or you can simply enjoy watching a fun movie with your family.  Pick a movie the entire family loves, and serve some seasonal snacks and drinks (apple cider is a great option).  If you want your movie night to be even more memorable, create your own movie theater outside.

Go on a Hayride

You can either go to a local farm that does hayrides, or you can make your own hayride if you have a truck.  Simply throw a few straw bales in the back of your truck, and drive your family and friends around the neighborhood.  Don’t have a pickup truck?  There are many places that do hayrides.  Look up on the internet for places near you that do hayrides.

Have a Canning Party

There are two different ways you can host a canning party.  You can invite your friends over to help you can your fall harvest, and in return give them some of the canned foods.  Or, if you have already canned your fall fruits and vegetables, have a canning party and make trades with your friends.  Both options are fun to do.

Roast Pumpkin Seeds

When you carve your pumpkins, don’t waste the seeds.  Pumpkins seeds are delicious to roast.  Roasted pumpkin seeds are easy to make.  All you need is 1 1/2 cups of raw whole pumpkin seeds, 2 teaspoons of melted butter, and one pinch of salt.  Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).  Place the seeds in a bowl with the melted butter and salt.  Spread the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for about 45 minutes or until it turns golden brown.

Bob for Apples

It may seem silly to bob for apples in a bucket of water, but this can be a really fun game for the entire family.  Simply fill a bucket with water, throw some apples in it, and have fun bobbing for apples.

Have a Picnic

Summer time isn’t the only time you can have picnics.  This fall, pack up your picnic throw blanket and some seasonal foods for a fun fall picnic.  Consider eating stews, roasted corn, fall fruits and vegetables, and for dessert serve pumpkin or apple pie.  Afterwards, go for a walk or visit a corn maize.

Plan a Treasure Hunt

Now is the perfect time of year to plan a treasure hunt for your kids.  Give clues that have to do with fall, and have the treasure be a fall-themed item.  With Halloween coming up, you may want the treasure to be Halloween candy.

Camp in Your Backyard

This may be the last time you can camp in your backyard for this year, so enjoy it.  Set up a tent in your backyard, light a fire in the fire pit, roast some marshmallows, and maybe throw some food on the grill.  If it is a clear night you may even be able to stargaze.  Make sure you have plenty of blankets and sweaters nearby.  The night air can be chilly, so be dressed for warmth.

Make a Scarecrow

Have fun making a scarecrow for your yard.  Be creative, and use whatever items you have around the house.  You may find that a carved pumpkin looks nice as the scarecrow head.

Have a Sack Race

Gather some potato sacks and have fun racing to the finish line.  Include the entire family for this activity, and have some prizes ready for the person who wins the sack race.

Visit a Sunflower Farm

A sunflower farm is a wonderful place to visit during the fall.  The sunflowers will be in bloom, and it can be fun to see all of the flowers.  Find out if you have a local sunflower farm near you by looking on the internet.

Fly a Kite

Fall is the perfect time to fly a kite.  Besides flying the kite, it can be a fun activity to make your own kite.  Include your kids on this project.

Take Your Christmas Photo

It may seem like Christmas is so far away, but before you know it Christmas will be here.  Why not get ahead and start planning out your Christmas card photo.   Perhaps you want to take a photo of you and your family on a hayride or collecting pumpkins.  Or you could take a picture of your family in the colorful leaves.  If you want, you can even wear Christmas hats in the photo.

Final Thoughts

There are so many fun fall activities you can do in autumn.  From picking apples to visiting a pumpkin patch, from having a picnic to camping in your backyard, the ideas are endless.  The important thing is that you get out there and you do it.  I hope you found these fall activities exciting to do.  Now, all that’s left to do is to put them on your bucket list and start doing them. Have fun!
