DIY Patio Furniture Ideas to Inspire You

1. Timber Side Table

This is a great idea if you’re not a fan of the mass-produced outdoor coffee tables. Moreover, you can brag about the fact that you did it yourself. Here’s what you need:

What You Need:

  • Green-treated pine timber;
  • Belt sander;
  • Measuring tape;
  • Circular saw;
  • Pencil;
  • Electric drill;
  • 8 wood dowels;
  • 2 clamps;
  • Wood glue.

How to Do It

The process is not a complicated one, but you will need some patience with it. First, you need to cut 4 identical timber pieces. A 20” length should be enough. With the pencil, mark 6” down from the top of each timber. Then, mark 2” in from the bottom of the opposing center. Cut according to the oblique marks. Do this for each of the timbers.

Next, drill 2 holes in each leg, big enough for the wood dowels to get in. Glue the dowels in the holes and clamp the timber legs together until they’re dry. Connect all the legs with the help of the wood dowels. Lastly, use the belt sander to even out the surfaces. Now is the time to make all the legs equal and to smoothen out the surfaces.

2. Pallet Daybed

A daybed is one of the most comfortable DIY garden ideas. They’re great for welcoming your guests, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee or spending your cozy evenings. Thankfully, this DIY patio furniture idea is not difficult to make.

What You Need:

  • Pallets;
  • Drill;
  • Bolts;
  • Casters;
  • Sander;
  • Outdoor treatment;

How to Do It

First, you should make sure that you have safe pallets that haven’t been treated chemically. Even if you use a mattress, the chemicals in them can be damaging over time. Depending on the size of the pallets, you might want to stick together two or more of them, case in which you need the bolts. The next step is to sand down the entire surface. Nobody wants to ruin their DIY patio furniture project with splinters, right?

Next, set up the casters and pin them with bolts. They are important in case you want to move the daybed. Most probably you will since you want to enjoy shade or sunlight. If you want to attach arms to it, you can either go for some trellis or pipes. Finally, make sure you use some outdoor treatment for the pallets, otherwise, they will rot. Paint them in your favorite colors and you’re set.

3. Farmhouse Dining Table

A dining table can turn out to be so much more if you do it yourself. You can omit the farmhouse look if you don’t like it, and go for a modern or even elegant one instead. Regardless of the final aspect, you will need the following tools.

What You Need:

  • Sliding miter;
  • Circular saw;
  • Drill;
  • Lumber;
  • Deck stain;
  • Sander;
  • Wood sealer;

How to Do It

First, you need to cut the timber in the sizes you need. It’s up to you how large, tall or short the table will be (you can even make a special one for your kids). However, make sure the legs are equal. Next, you should be using the sander. This step is not compulsory, you can also go for a rugged and raw look. Use the circular saw and the sliding miter for cutting and drilling holes. Screw the legs together to the table top.

Next, use a wood sealer and a deck stain to protect your table. The choice of colors is entirely up to you, depending on the rest of your furniture and decorations. Alternatively, you can use some extra lumber for a foot rest at the base of the table, but this is optional.

4. Bistro Set

Yet another one of the best DIY patio furniture ideas is to create your own bistro set. If you love food or simply eating outdoors, this suggestion is great for you.

What You Need:

  • Bistro set;
  • Paint roller;
  • Foam brushes;

How to Do It

This is perhaps the easier project you can do yourself for your backyard. You should decide from the start if you want to use a bistro set ready-made or you want to do it yourself as well. In this case, you can follow the steps from the previous suggestions to build the chairs and the table.

Once you have the set ready, you only need to paint it. To make it look colorful, you should paint some areas white, while the rest should be colorful. Go for crazy and intense colors: blue, yellow, orange, etc. You don’t have to consider necessarily the rest of the colors in the garden, you may even keep it all white. Use the paint roller for the white areas for a smooth process. For the small and colorful areas, use foam brushes. Keep some paper handy so that you won’t paint too much next to the delimitations.
