It’s fun to decorate the house for Winter, especially if you get to break out all of your fuzzy blankets. Put out fluffy throws for couches, flannel sheets for bedding, and soft rugs for feet. This will help everyone stay a little warmer so that you don’t need to keep the house quite so hot. Plus it will be all snuggly and warm in your house. Who doesn’t want that?

Use Your Ceiling Fans

This seems a little counter-productive if you want to lower your heating bill, but it works! Turning your ceiling fan in a certain direction will help circulate warm air instead of cool your house down. Your ceiling fan can do a lot of the work for your furnace. A furnace will come on to keep the house at a steady temperature that you set. If hot air is being circulated more, then your furnace won’t need to come on as often because your house will stay warmer longer.

Turn the Thermostat Down

This seems like a no-brainer. Obviously, you can turn the thermostat down and you’d lower your heating bill. The problem is that you don’t want to freeze! Well, all you need to do is turn it down a couple of degrees at night when you’re asleep. Everyone will be underneath warm covers and you won’t notice the temperature change. Some people like it a little cooler when they sleep anyway. An automatic thermostat can lower the temperature at night all by itself.

Insulate Everything

A lot of warm air can escape if your house isn’t insulated properly. You may need to add more insulation to your walls to keep that precious warm air in. This might cost some money up front but it’ll definitely lower your heating bill in the future. You can also insulate your windows by using insulated curtains to keep cold air out and warm air in. If you don’t want to buy curtains, you can use a clear window film so that you can still receive sunlight to warm the house and keep out cold air.

Use Your Fireplace

Don’t forget to open it back up before you want to start a fire so that your entire house doesn’t fill up with smoke! Then you’d have to open up all the windows to get rid of the smoke, and all your hot air would escape too. Not ideal.
