What Is a Dutch Oven?

Let’s begin by taking a look at what a Dutch Oven actually is.  Although it is a popular cookware item, this type of pan/pot is still unfamiliar to many.  Dutch ovens are cylindrical, heavy gauge cooking pots with tight-fitting lids that can be used on the stove, in the oven, or even on a campfire, which we will take a closer look at today.  The heavy metal or ceramic construction provides constant, even, and multi-directional radiant heat to the food being cooked inside. 

Dutch Ovens can be used for roasting, frying, bread, soups, stews, casseroles, and desserts. There are two different types of Dutch Ovens:  Cast iron Dutch Ovens and ceramic Dutch Ovens. Although the ceramic Dutch Ovens are easier to clean and are very durable, they don’t always withstand high temperatures.  If you are wanting to stay safe, it is best to use a cast iron Dutch Oven.  Besides, there are so many benefits of using Cast Iron pans and cookware.

How to Make Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler Over a Campfire

There is nothing quite like eating food from a campfire on a camping trip. Whether you are on a vacation or are camping in your backyard, there are so many delicious recipes you can cook on a campfire.  As you will see, peach cobbler is one of those recipes.  Although it may seem difficult to cook peach cobbler over a campfire, let alone a Dutch Oven, it is not as difficult as it may seem.  Later in this article, I will go over some basic tips for cooking with a Dutch Oven over a campfire, but first, let’s take a look at how to make a campfire peach cobbler.

Ingredients Needed:

  • 2 pounds peaches, thawed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup sugar, divided
  • 1 cup pancake mix
  • 1/4 cup butter, cut into 1/8-in. pieces
  • 1 large egg
  • Sweetened whipped cream or ice cream (optional)

Step 1:  Prepare the Fire

The first step to making a Dutch Oven peach cobbler is to prepare the fire.  This means you’ll need to find a spot to start your campfire.  If there happens to be a fire ring where you are camping, you will probably need to push back the ashes from previous fires.  If you have to create your own fire pit, clear away any dead grass or vegetation for 8 to 10 feet around.  Then dig down into the cleared soil several inches and set the loose dirt off to one side for use in case of emergency.  You can mound the dirt around the sides of the pit to act as a firewall, or place large rocks around the edge of the pit to insulate the fire.

After you have prepared your site, arrange your kindling in teepee fashion over your tinder.  Then build a larger teepee of firewood over the kindling.  When lit, the flames will rise up through the kindling and into the larger wood.  Besides wood, you’ll also need red coals.  Coal is actually what cooks the food, not the flames.

Step 2:  Begin Mixing the Ingredients

Mix the peaches, cinnamon, and 1/2 cup sugar in a 6-quart cast iron camp Dutch oven.  Next, in a different medium-sized bowl stir the pancake mix, butter, egg, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/4 cup water to make a thick and chunky batter.  Drop 4 evenly spaced heaping spoonfuls of this batter over the peaches.  Put the lid on the Dutch Oven.

Step 3:  Set Up the Dutch Oven

Next, you will need to set up your Dutch Oven over the fire.  For many recipes, you just set the Dutch Oven on top of the hot coals (this is called bottom heat cooking).  But there are times when you’ll need to heat both the top and bottom of the oven.  To do this, scrape about half the coals to the side and arrange the rest in a circle the size of the Dutch Oven’s outer edge.  Set the oven on top of the circle of coals, then pile the rest of the coals on top of the lid.  This will ensure that the Dutch Oven peach cobbler will cook and become heated.

Step 4:  Begin Cooking

Place the Dutch Oven in the fire, as I have already instructed you.  Lift the Dutch Oven lid occasionally to check the food and temperature.  To decrease the heat, scrape away some of the coal.  To increase the heat, or to cook longer than 45 minutes, add 6 to 10 new briquets of coal or more wood embers (from the wood you moved to the side of your fire pit) every 30 minutes.

Step 5:  Serve Your Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler

Once the peach cobbler is cooked, you’ll notice the batter is puffed, firm, and starting to brown. This means that it is ready to be served.  Serve the Dutch Oven peach cobbler plain or with whip cream or ice cream.

Tips for Cooking with a Dutch Oven

Although Dutch Ovens are generally easy to use, it can still take a while to get the hang of cooking with it.  It can be especially difficult for beginners to learn how to cook over a campfire.  To help you get started with cooking your Dutch Oven peach cobbler, here are some basic tips for you to follow.

Start Earlier in the Day

If you plan on cooking your campfire peach cobbler for dinner, you will need to start cooking it early.  It takes about 45 minutes for it to cook, but it could take longer depending on how hot your fire is burning.  Make sure you start cooking it a few hours before dark.  That way, it will have plenty of time to cook and you will have plenty of time to clean the Dutch Oven once the peach cobbler is served.

Don’t Forget to Season Your Dutch Oven

Seasoning your Dutch Oven is very important, especially when cooking other foods such as dinners or breakfasts.  If you don’t season it, cleanup will be so much more difficult.  One of the best ways to season a Dutch Oven is to add veggie oil into it and bake it for an hour or so in the oven at the highest temperature your oven has.  500 degrees is the recommended temperature.  After an hour, turn the oven off, let it cool, and you are ready to cook.  This prevents sticking and increases flavor.  After seasoning it, you should never really have to season it again.

Cleaning Is Easy If You Season It Properly

If you have seasoned your Dutch Oven properly, cleaning it should be very simple.  To clean it, wipe the Dutch Oven with a paper towel or sponge until it is completely clean.  If you find yourself scrubbing the Dutch Oven or using soap, you will want to re-season your dutch oven.  Although cleaning a Dutch Oven should be easy, you should always keep an extra sponge along just in case you can’t get your Dutch Oven clean.

Don’t Have the Dutch Oven on the Ground If the Ground Is Cold

If the ground is cold or wet, your peach cobbler will not cook as fast.  Although you can usually cook with the Dutch Oven directly on the ground, if the ground is cold you’ll want to set it on a fireproof rack.

Rotate the Dutch Oven Once in a While

Not only should you continue to check on the peach cobbler while it is cooking, but you should also rotate your Dutch Oven.  That way, the entire peach cobbler will become cooked and warm instead of just one side of it.

Ways Your Kids Can Help You

Going on a camping trip is a great experience for kids, and also very educational.  Your kids will most likely devour this Dutch Oven peach cobbler very quickly, but why not let them help out with the cooking as well.  Remember that safety is always first, so make sure your kids stay away from the fire and do not try to play with it.  Here are some simple ways your kids can help you make peach cobbler in a safe and helpful way.
