Summer is here and that means lots of fun in the sun! Many Summer days are spent lying in the sun by the pool, hiking, or just enjoying the weather outside. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the sun, but too much sun causes a lot of damage to your skin. Nobody likes sunburns and prolonged sun exposure can eventually lead to skin cancer. Here are 5 things you can do to protect yourself from the sun this summer.

Wear Sunscreen

This is first for a reason, it’s the most important! Broad spectrum sunscreen is recommended because it protects you from both UV and UVB rays. Wear at least SPF 30 to ensure protection. Put on sunscreen before you’re exposed to the sun so that it has time to absorb into your skin. This is especially important if you’re swimming because it can wash off. Remember, it doesn’t have to be sunny for you to get sunburned. There are plenty of UV rays even on a cloudy day.

Wear UV Sunglasses

Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. The good thing about sunglasses is that they look good too! There are a lot of different styles and colors of sunglasses that you can choose from. Pick a pair that you like and wear them when you go outside on a sunny day. As an added bonus they’ll also prevent wrinkles. People usually squint when it’s bright outside and that causes crow’s feet around the eyes. If you’re wearing sunglasses you are less likely to squint from the brightness of the sun.

Wear a Wide Brimmed Hat

A wide brimmed hat will do a great job at protecting you from the sun. It’ll shade your head, face, and neck. There are also a ton of cute options for wide brimmed hats. There are even some hats that are specially made to protect against UV rays. If you sunburn easily, this would be a great addition to your wardrobe.

Stay Hydrated

When you’re out in the sun for a long time, it can dehydrate you. If you become too dehydrated you can have a heat stroke. Dehydration can complicate sunburns and make you feel dizzy and faint. Make sure you have plenty of fluids for you, and for your family. Pay close attention to your kids and the amount that they are drinking. They are less likely to take a time out from playing to get a drink.

Avoid Tanning in the Sun During Peak Hours

A lot of people love laying in the sun to get tanner. While this is not completely harmful to you, it isn’t the best either. During peak hours of sunlight you are exposed to a lot of UV rays. Consider bringing a shade tent with you so that you can get some shade during those hours. This will help you be able to get a break from the sun while you are resting.

Summing Up

The sun is great. Without the sun, we wouldn’t be alive. This doesn’t mean that we can’t be harmed by the sun. Since Summer is the time to be outside, it’s when we are most likely to be overexposed to UV rays. Do what you can to protect yourself from the sun this Summer so that you won’t regret it later.
