Squirrel Proof? Or Not?

As of this writing, the Audubon Squirrel Proof Caged Bird Feeder had 140 customer comments and 27 answered questions left on Amazon.  I’ve read through the comments and also the answered questions and then condensed the results into this review.  I  hope that this makes your shopping experience faster and easier.

The Audubon Squirrel Proof Caged Bird Feeder was made to do what the name intended.  And that is to keep squirrels out of the feed.  But does it live up to it’s name?  Sadly, I must report no it does not.  While it is a sturdy bird feeder that does a good job of keeping the big birds out, many of the reports left from customers said the squirrels did get in.  Several people even sent photos of squirrels inside of this feeder.  Others reported that squirrels destroyed the feeder by chewing through the top.  Another said that squirrels would shake the feeder and get the seeds to fall out so that they could eat them.

Pros

The biggest advantage to the Audubon Squirrel Proof Caged Bird Feeder is that it is sturdy.  It also does a good job of keeping big birds out of the feeder.  Some people don’t like the doves, cardinals and similarly sized birds eating the seed.  So in that respect, it does it’s job well.  Here, one happy customer explains, “We absolutely LOVE this bird feeder. No grackles, cow birds, red winged black can get in it and wipe out all of the bird seed like they do with our other feeders. We plan on replacing all of our feeders with this one.”

A big disadvantage is that a large number of customers said that squirrels could get in this squirrel proof bird feeder.  Many of the customers who bought this said that squirrels managed to get in and get the seed.  Some of them even took photos of squirrels inside the caged section.

A bigger disadvantage though is that the caging safety is questionable.  One customer reported this, “Last week, a bird caught its foot in the narrow gap (about 1/8″) between sides of the cage. We don’t know how long it was caught, but when it was dead we found it. As a quick fix, we caulked the opening and are looking for a permanent solution.”   Another reported a similar situation, “I’ve had the feeder up almost a year and just recently a bird got its “toe” stuck in the metal clasps on the feeder, it had mangled its leg and badly damaged it by the time I got to him to free him. I’m going to wrap the metal claps with tape or something to prevent this again.”

Another disadvantage is that people who bought it to keep the squirrels out realize that it also keeps out the big birds that they want to attract.  Some people want to feed the larger birds like the blue jays and others do not, so it really depends on what you see as an advantage or disadvantage on what it keeps out.
