8 Things You Can Do to Replace Air Conditioning and Save Money

It’s no secret that Summer gets hot. It’s also not a secret that air conditioning can get expensive. Your air conditioning bill will most likely continue to climb as the Summer gets hotter and hotter. So what can you do to save some money this Summer? Here are 8 things you can do to keep your house cool and save money.

Get More Trees

You can start small trees or plant trees that are already well developed. Either way, shade trees will make your house significantly cooler. This isn’t a quick fix, trees can take years to grow. Although it might take awhile, it’s very effective. With all that shade around, you won’t have to use your AC as much!

Close Unused Doors

Close doors to rooms that aren’t being used. Cool air will travel to areas where people don’t spend a lot of time and this will waste all that cool air. Close those doors so that cool air stays where people spend a lot of time.

Close Your Blinds

A lot of heat comes through windows. Close your blinds to prevent the sun from making your house an oven. The blinds will block out the sun and keep your house much cooler.

Get Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains do a great job at keep the sun out. That’s what they were made for! Not only will they keep rooms dark so you can sleep better, they’ll also keep your rooms cooler.

Set Your Ceiling Fans to Counter-Clockwise

Fans going counter-clockwise push cool air down. Believe it or not, this will make a difference in the temperature of your house.

Utilize Cool Air

The temperature drops every night when the sun goes down. Utilize this time to get as much cool air into your house as possible. After the sun has gone down, open all the windows and screen doors and let the cool air come in. When the sun starts to come up, close the windows and doors to trap the cool air inside your house.

Imitate AC

Put an ice pack in a bowl and in front of a fan. The fan will blow the cool air off of the ice pack and into the house. This does a remarkable job at imitating air conditioning. The only problem is that you have to be around the fan to feel the cool air. It doesn’t travel around the house as well as AC. However, the cost of the imitation method is much cheaper!

Do Your Cooking Outside

Ovens make houses hotter. If you’re planning a lot meals that need to be cooked in the oven, consider altering them so that they can be grilled. If you grill outside, all the heat will be outside too! All that extra heat won’t be trapped inside your house.

Summing Up

Air conditioning is a very expensive, but effective way to keep your house cool. If saving money is more important to you, one of these methods will save you money and do a pretty good job at cooling your house. They might not be as effective as air conditioning, but they will definitely help in the hot Summer months. There are some families that have totally switched from AC and only do these things to keep cool in the Summer. Try one of these methods and see how good they are at cooling down your house, while saving you money.
